Collection: BURRS

Burr (known also as burl) is a highly decorative veneer sliced from abnormal, knobby growths (burrs) on tree trunks or roots caused by stress, injury or virus.

Renowned for intricate swirling grain patterns and marbled effects, all burrs have a unique appearance as no two pieces are the same. This rare, prized material is used in luxury furniture, automotive, and musical instruments.

Popular varieties include Walnut, Oak, Elm and Madrone.  Due to its rarity and instability as solid wood, it is almost always sliced into thin veneers (approx. 0.6mm to 1mm) and applied to stable surfaces often using techniques like book-matching to create symmetrical patterns.

Burr veneer is brittle and often contains small holes or cracks, requiring careful, expert handling and specialised drying for stability.
